Is Grad School Worth It?

You see friends going back to graduate school. Your mother clips newspaper mentions of grad programs and slyly mails them to you with "thinking of you" post-its attached. You see a job posting for the position of your dreams, then notice the "master's degree required." In short, there are a lot of reasons you're thinking about going back to school.

In 2004, there were over 2 million students enrolled in U.S. graduate schools, and it may seem clear to everyone around you (that newspaper-clipping mother of yours, for instance) that you should be among them. Credentials are great, but you've probably also heard the horror stories of the "over-qualified candidate." And while Mr. Over-qualified may be an urban legend, the tradeoffs involved in either leaving the workforce or continuing to work while earning a degree are significant. Financially, professionally, and personally, is graduate school really worth it?

Graduate School to Launch Your Career

For Chris, 30, the answer to the "was it worth it" question is a definite yes. He went straight from college into a Masters of Teaching (MAT) program. "My undergraduate drama degree wasn't landing me any jobs," he says, "and I wasn't passionate enough about acting to [endure] the waiter/actor life for long." A year and a master's degree later, he started teaching. His degree gave him the teaching license he needed, but because it was a graduate degree, it also meant his salary was several thousand dollars higher than other beginning teachers who only held bachelor's degrees. What's more, each year thereafter his salary increased at a higher rate than theirs, but the real clincher was that he got to be a drama teacher.

For many people like Chris, a graduate degree is a means of launching a career. Academics present a classic argument for a post-graduate degree as a PhD is essential. This also holds true for doctors and lawyers. However, if you're already working in your field of choice and are simply looking to get ahead, the question of graduate school may become more complicated.

Graduate School as a Career Booster

Will, 29, works in hotel management and decided the time off in going to graduate school wasn't worth it. "I'd get a bump in pay and position if I got an MBA, but in my industry, just working those two years would get me more in terms of promotions, experience, and salary." However, he decided he wanted the extra education anyway. Will felt that education would give him a slight boost at work and because it would give him a foundation to make a change in career field easier if he ever wanted to make one. So his solution was to keep working while enrolling in a distance-learning MBA program. Even though it's the "have-it-all" answer, it hasn't been without sacrifices. He's busier than ever, with weekends and evenings now packed with schoolwork. For him, though, it's worth it. "My wife and I don't have kids yet," he explains, "so this is the best time for us to work really hard."

Part-time or distance learning graduate degree programs are becoming more and more popular. In 1990 only about a third of graduate students were enrolled part-time, but today roughly half of them are. For students like Will, doubling up works fine, but for others it can be a real burden. With more graduate school options than ever, there's plenty of flexibility to be had, but you'll have to take a close look at your personal life and the changes that you'll need to make.

Graduate School as Reinvention

Karin, 28, also enrolled in a post-collegiate program while working full-time, but for her, the program was all about reinvention. She already had an MBA and was working at a job she liked well enough, but she couldn't stop thinking "that if I really loved what I was doing, life would be different." So she finally enrolled in a massage therapy program. She took weekend and evening courses, and now that she has the experience and education she needs to be a practicing massage therapist, she's said goodbye to technology management and hello to her own massage therapy business. "Now I'm doing what I really want to be doing and building my own business, and I'm so excited about it," she says. Unlike her old job, she explains, "Here people come happy and leave happy. It's as much therapy for me as it is for my clients."

If you're looking to change over to another field--and you're not alone in the modern workforce where mid-career career change is commonplace--a graduate degree or certificate or even coursework in a new area can do the trick.

Even with all the upsides of post-collegiate education, the answer to "is it worth it?" is still complicated. Take a close look at your profession, the flexibility of various programs, and your personal and financial situation because when all is said and done, the only real question is "is it worth it for me?" Sterling Politics versus Dollar and Euro

The Macro Trader's view:

This week's pre-budget report was, broadly speaking, a disappointment. It has been judged broadly fiscal neutral, with all the tough spending decisions deferred until after the General election due by May/June of next year, despite assurances to the contrary by Chancellor Darling.

The headline measure, a punitive tax on Banker's bonuses, is little more than a populist measure designed to please the Labour party faithful and assuage perceived public outrage over bonuses paid to a group of workers whose firms are only still in business because of a tax payer funded bailout.

Why then, is the Pound not under greater selling pressure? The ratings agencies, Moody's in particular, have questioned the sustainability of the UK's AAA sovereign credit rating. The implication is that without a credible deficit reduction plan, the rating could be lost, which would increase the cost of funding the public deficit and make reducing it even harder. And although Darling claimed in the pre-budget report that the deficit will be halved over the next four years, the statement looks long on aspiration and short on explanation of how it is to be achieved.

In reality, the Chancellor is first and foremost a politician and retaining power is his priority. The ruling Labour party are seriously behind the opposition Conservative party in the opinion polls and look like leaving office after next year's election. The pre-budget report was never going to announce any measure that risked upsetting the already slim chance of re-election.

There are only 5 or 6 months to go until a new government is elected and the markets seem to understand this and have decided that the Pound should be given the benefit of the doubt. If Labour were unexpectedly to win they would raise tax as a means of cutting borrowing with spending cuts taking less of the strain. If the Conservatives win, they have declared that spending cuts will be their main route to cutting the deficit back sharply. The reason for the Pound's resilience arises from the polls prediction that they will have a decent working majority.

Yet the Pound's performances against the Euro and the Dollar are slightly different: · Against the Euro it has remained within a broad trading range that has dominated since October, and although the Euro zone has already emerged from recession, there are negatives about Euro zone public finances too. · Against the Dollar the Pound has weakened recently, and looks vulnerable to further selling. Why the relative weakness against the Dollar (albeit slight) which has been weak itself for so long? The Dollar is currently enjoying a correction that is fuelled by lingering concerns over the Dubai debt rescheduling drama and a stronger-than-expected US non-farm payroll report released last Friday which aroused fears of an early turn in the US monetary policy cycle.

The markets are suspicious despite denials by Bernanke the Federal reserve Chairman. In any case, the US is out of recession whereas the UK is not.

The Technical Trader's view:

Sterling v Dollar and Euro long-term

WEEKLY DOLLAR / STERLING CHART In the long-term Cable chart the pressure on Sterling arises from repeated failure at a clear band of resistance 1.6802- 1.7020 throughout 2009. But there is no completed Top yet in place (that requires a breakdown through 1.5709). So the market is not immediately in the grip of a medium-term force. (The modest support from the rising diagonal is being tested right now and may provide further clues.)

WEEKLY EURO/STERLING CHART In the Euro/Sterling, the long-term chart shows the weakness of Sterling from mid 2009 to have arisen from the formation of a continuation pattern a bull falling wedge which completed in September this year. (Of course, wedges are not the strongest of indicators.) It would be much clearer for the Sterling bears if the possible Neckline above the market at 0.9380 were to be breached....completing a bull H&S pattern Sterling v Dollar and Euro long-term

DAILY DOLLAR/STERLING CHART Short-term, in Cable a small Head and Shoulders Reversal looks to have completed - though we need a confirming close beneath the neckline at 1.6294 today. The minimum target of that pattern is more or less the critical Pivot at the Prior Low at 1.5709....

DAILY EURO/STERLING CHART Short-term, against the Euro, the picture is strangely congruent with the long-term chart. The market is again in the grip of a bull wedge (created, note well, by the solid support from the Prior High at 0.8838). The Fibonacci 50% resistance may be proving troublesome, in any event, there is no very short-term pattern driving the market.

The Renegade Network Marketer - Different From the Old School Marketer

If you are trying to improve your MLM business, but are having difficulty finding good prospects, you may need a new system. Traditional marketing strategies tell you that you should concentrate on using your family, friends, and those close to you as potential prospects. You are essentially asked to cold call the people around you and pitch your service or product to them. The differences between the Renegade Network Marketer and the Old School marketer are clear if you can imagine yourself as the consumer or prospect. Who would have your attention, a person calling out of the blue or the person with information and advice that you have sought out yourself?

The Renegade Network Marketer understands that the best prospects are the ones who are looking for an opportunity and are actively seeking information. Even if the same person is approached with same opportunity, but one is giving information and the other is trying to make a sell, the potential prospect is more likely to stand behind the information. It's simple, really, no one wants to lose money or waste his or her time. If you present yourself as a knowledgeable person, you will generate more business. When you use network marketing this way, you are giving your prospects an opportunity without leaving them to figure out the business on their own. This will, in turn, give you more business opportunities.

Old school network marketers bring in prospects and spend time with them. Sometimes this method works out, but often it does not. They may find that, not only is the prospect uninterested in the business, they are also unqualified to participate. The marketer has wasted valuable time and money on a misguided lead. The Renegade network marketer attracts the right type of prospects to them and often has a prerequisite to help them weed out leads even further. This ensures that they only spend time with the leads that have the maximum potential to improve their business, which is better for both parties.

How does the Renegade network marketer determine what types of content and information to give? By first deciding whom they want to attract. The old school marketer may go into a sell with only the thought of selling. This may generate some sales, but will ultimately leave you frustrated. If you, instead, decide who would best benefit from your product or service and then create information that is tailored to their needs, you will direct your prospects to your door.
