Sports Psychology

In these very modern times, sports teams are not only made up of athletes and coaches. Team members also include members of different professions whose main purpose is to ensure maximum performance of the athletes. Some of these include team managers, doctors, physiotherapists and sports psychologists, who only deal in sports psychology. Put together, all should ensure there is a balance and stability of mind, body and soul.

Sports psychology is about how athletes handle different stressors of sports. It’s also about the athletes’ endurance. From observing the athlete, the psychologist along with the coach, can customize training sections for each athlete based on the evaluation given by the psychologist. They will know how far to push the athlete without getting them to their breaking point.

The psychologists work with the entire team, to ensure the athletes are giving their optimal performances. The team members are often taught to rely on each others strengths and you find that this is a source of encouragement when they are competing.

The sports psychologist studies the behavior of athletes before, during and after sporting events. With this information at hand, the coach with advice from the psychologist can plan a training routine that will utilize all the athletes’ abilities. The coaches are aware of all the stressors and endurance levels of the athletes under their watch, and this should serve as a guide on how to handle each individual athlete.

As a rule of thumb, the coaches and other training staff should also have some understanding of the basics of sports psychology. This will help them understand the psychologist better, the terms used, and they will be in a better position to make some judgments and decisions.

Cycling - the German Team Gerolsteiner Retires From the Cycling Sector

Another well-known German cycling team announced its retirement from the cycling sector. The Team Gerolsteiner is the third team that within one year retires after T-Mobile and the only in 2006 promoted Team Wiesenhof-Felt. The teamâ€™s sponsor T-Mobile which was managed by the US American Bob Stapleton announced the end of his engagement already in November 2007 after a range of doping cases.

Fortunately for the cyclists the team was not totally dissolved but now participate under the name Team Colombia. The renamed team is now sponsored by the UA American Columbia Sportswear Company that manufactures and distributes outerwear and sportswear. The Team Columbia is headquartered in the Californian San Luis Obispo. Columbia Sportswear began sponsoring the team in July 2008 with the first race of the Tour de France. The sponsoring contract is made for preliminary three years. Manager of the team will remain the US American Bob Stapleton. There are still eight German cyclists starting for the now American team, among others the currently best German cyclist of the team Andre Greipel who won the tenth Tour Down Under this year. This tour is a race beyond Europe but counts towards the UCI ProTour.

Unfortunately the Team Gerolsteiner didnâ€™t have that much luck finding another sponsor. Hans-Michael Holczer is team chef since the foundation in 1998. He is searching in vain for a successor of the mineral water company Gerolsteiner. For this reason unfortunately he had to announce the fold of the team at the end of this year. The 54-year-old Holczer is as well manager of a cycle shop and still has a little bit of hope. At a press statement he advertised that if anybody should ever have the intention to be a main sponsor of a big professional cycle team they could come to him and he would be more than glad to offer his advice and help for the realization.Â

Some of the cyclist of the team already got in touch with new teams. Gerolsteiner's top riders are amongst others Bernhard Kohl from Austria and Stefan Schumacher from Germany who won the fourth stage of this yearâ€™s Tour de France and could take over the Yellow Jersey of the overall leader. As first and so far sole German cyclist was Jan Ullrich able to achieve the overall victory at the Tour de France in 1997.

Now we are standing again at the beginning of the German cycling section just as 1991 when the first German cycling team was founded with the Team Telekom which now is known under the name Team Columbia. The professional cycling team Milram exists since the beginning of 2006 and is sponsored by the Nordic milk concern Milram Corporation. The 38-year-old German cyclist Erik Zabel is currently the captain of the team.Â Â Â

Apparently three cyclists (Johannes FrÃ¶hlinger, Matthias RuÃŸ and Fabian Wegmann) already signed a new contract with the Team Milram and it seems like sports director Christian Henn will switch to the â€œMilkmenâ€ as well. Next to Linus Gerdemann, Gerald Ciolek, the brothers Markus und Thomas Fothen the Milram team chef van Gerwen might also be interested in Stefan Schumacher.

The young team wants to take the chance and make a fresh start with the best German cyclist to bring back glamour, interest and a good reputation to the German cycling section. Van Gerwen said: â€œThis will be a team which my heart will be clung to.â€

Never has a sport, or its participants been under such a strict inspection for doping as professional cycling is now. Even though time has passed since Floyd Landis was striped of his title as cycling's greatest champion after two of his urine samples showed an unusually high ratio of testosterone, the cycling authorities do not seem to get pass the embarrassment.

The races go on, but with more caution from the authorities, they do not want to leave any open window for a new scandal. Most American riders claim they are not to be involved in the doping allegations in Europe; we all understand the current problems are dangerous for the overall image of the sport. In the same way, they fear fans might label all cyclists as cheats and that will take away the fame and fun of the sport.

In Landis' specific case media has played an important role and people has been led to confusion since no official trial has been conducted by the U.S Anti-Doping Agency. Some people believe his statements and say that he is innocent, some people believe he is guilty, and there are others who just blame it all on the French. People have made Floyd Landis a non-cheating cheater.

I agree with people making their own opinion, what I really do not agree with is that, although the opinions are divided it all bends more toward the assumption that Landis is already guilty, well before the American cyclist has faced any official charges that may be brought against him by the United States Anti-Doping Agency for a positive test for testosterone at the Tour de France. Media gave Landis no opportunity, if we think back in cycling Justin Gatlin's results were announced four months after he first tested positive, and because of a leak, his dream turned to a nightmare very quickly. I just feel that even though he was positive in both samples, he should have been given time to defend himself properly, instead of basically being tried immediately in the public eye.
